Richard Wells: Mary Did You Know?

Mark Lowry wrote the lyrics and Buddy Greene wrote the music to one of the most Theologically correct songs concerning the incarnation of God the Son that I have ever heard.

Several years ago, I made a MIDI sequence arrangement track at Simpsonville Baptist Church on the Yamaha CLP-230 digital piano that the Church has.

Some time after that, I was over in Bossier City, Louisiana at Red River Studio with my buddy Charles Smith and we recorded my voice on the track along with a couple of harmony parts. My pitch wasn't as good as I would have liked on the harmonies in spots, but I was in a little bit of a rush to get it done.

My arrangement is loosely based on the Mark Lowry, David Phelps and Guy Penrod rendition. My goal in putting this out there is two-fold:

1. That God gets all the glory! (1 Corinthians 2:1-2) 1 "And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. 2 For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified."

2. That it would draw someone who hears it into a personal relationship with Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life! (Romans 1:16) "For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Richard, this is beautiful. I especially loved the harmonies. I have perfect pitch, and I didn't notice any mistakes.

Last year, I wrote a poem inspired by this song. Enjoy!

What I Didn’t Know
Copyright 2024 by Abbie Johnson Taylor

On that silent, holy night,
as I cradled my son,
while shepherds and wise men worshiped him,
I knew that his name would be Jesus,
and he would rule the world.

I didn't realize he would give sight to the blind,
hearing to the deaf,
the lame the ability to walk.
It never occurred to me
he would calm the waters, raise the dead.

I had no idea that years later,
one of his disciples having betrayed him,
his work as King would cause him great pain and death
in sacrifice for our sins.

As I gazed on my sleeping child,
undisturbed by people and animals around us,
I pondered God's glory in that moment.
