Blessings and Testimony
Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground; neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field, saith the LORD of hosts. And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the LORD of hosts.
Malachi 3:10-12
God blesses His children when they live and act in accordance with His commands. While our love for Him is a more important motivation for obedience than what we might receive in return, God does promise to pour out blessings on those who do what He says. This blessing is not just for our own benefit. The blessings that God gives to us are a powerful testimony to those around us of what He can do. “Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them. The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad” (Psalm 126:2-3).
As the children of God, we are His representatives in the world. Our lives either present a positive impression of who He is and what He can do, or they send the message that being a Christian is really no different from following any other religion or none at all. Alexander MacLaren wrote, “The world takes its notions of God, most of all, from the people who say that they belong to God’s family. They read us a great deal more than they read the Bible. They see us; they only hear about Jesus Christ.” Anything that we allow in our lives that hinders us from receiving God's blessing also hinders us from being the most effective witnesses for Him that we can be.
The more our obedience lets God's blessings flow into our lives, the more His power will be visible in our lives.
