Influencing the Future
For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children: That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children: That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:
Psalm 78:5-7
Much of the Upper Midwest and New England regions had the unpleasant experience of having “dirty rain” in April of 2025. The light rain left a film of mud over cars and buildings. The phenomenon is fairly rare, but it followed a serious dust storm in the far West. Christian Bridges, a meteorologist with WGME-TV in Portland, Maine, explained, “You could see that dust got picked up in New Mexico two days before on Thursday by the same storm system. It then brought it up into the far northern part of the U.S. and then eventually brought it all the way to New England. So the rain kind of grabbed the dust as it was falling and brought it down to the ground. It’s kind of cool to think it was transported 2,000 miles across the country.”
The actions that we take every day and the decisions we make do not just impact our lives. They have consequences that stretch far into the future. This is equally true of good things and bad things. Those who do what is right have a positive impact on the future. “The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him” (Proverbs 20:7). Those who choose to disobey God have a negative impact on others. “Did not Achan the son of Zerah commit a trespass in the accursed thing, and wrath fell on all the congregation of Israel? and that man perished not alone in his iniquity” (Joshua 22:20). This life is not just about us. The decisions we make and the courses we choose for our own lives will echo even after we are gone.
Every action and decision should be weighed not just by its present result, but by its impact on the future.
