“Pick me! Pick me!”
And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, "It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty." – Acts 6:2-3
Do you ever long to be picked? Chosen? Noticed?
Deep down, we all long to be singled out for something meaningful. There’s a funny moment in the movie Shrek where Donkey is bouncing up and down shouting, “Pick me! Pick me!” And honestly, who hasn’t felt that way at some point?
In Acts 6 the early church faced a practical dilemma. Certain widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food, and the apostles had to choose seven men to serve. One of those chosen was Stephen.
Now imagine Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, being picked not to preach a famous sermon or perform miracles—but to serve. He didn’t hesitate. He stepped into what looked like an ordinary role with humility and faith, and it ended up changing everything. He became the first martyr of the church, a man who reflected Christ even in his final moments.
What if today, instead of asking God to pick us for the spotlight, we asked Him to pick us for service? You never know what He can do through a heart willing to say yes.
