DAILY DEVOTION
Daily Patriotism
I remembered thy judgments of old, O LORD; and have comforted myself. Horror hath taken hold upon me because of the wicked that forsake thy law. Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage. I have remembered thy name, O LORD, in the night, and have kept thy law. This I had, because I kept thy precepts.
Psalm 119:52-56
Though he could easily have been elected to a third term in office as President, George Washington chose not to run again. His explanation and vision for the future, commonly known as his Farewell Address, was actually not spoken, but instead printed in newspapers across the country. Looking into the future, Washington warned of threats the new nation would face. One of those was a departure from the principles of the Word of God on which freedom was claimed, fought for and won. Today we see a great deal of evidence of the truth of Washington's words.
“Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism, who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens. And let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion. Whatever may be conceded to the influence of refined education on minds of peculiar structure, reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”
When we think about patriotism, we often focus on service to our country, perhaps in the military or in politics or some form of community involvement. But the best thing that a person who loves his country can do is to first be the best Christian possible. The more that we order our lives in accordance to the Bible, the stronger our impact and influence will be. In a world where many have forsaken God’s truth, we are called to cling more tightly to Christ and to live His Word—not only for our personal comfort and direction, but for the good of those around us. A life rooted in Scripture strengthens both our witness and our nation.
The most patriotic thing you can do on a daily basis is walk closely with God and live out His Word.
