Luke 17:17-19 (LSB) 17 Then Jesus answered and said, “Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine—where are they? 18 Was there no one found who turned back to give glory to God, except this foreigner?” 19 And He said to him, “Stand up and go; your faith has saved you.”
Were there not ten cleansed? But the nine—where are they?
I remember reading this many years ago and having the significance of it really hit home for the first time.
Jesus had just healed ten lepers. And only one took the time to thank Him.
The other nine literally ran off to show themselves to the priests but had not bothered to thank the One who had given them this incredible gift of healing.
They had gone from unclean (leprous) to clean (healed) in a split second yet failed to give honor to the One who made that happen.
This is a valuable lesson that we can learn from.
It is not spiritually deep. It does not require powerful discernment. And it does not require high levels of Biblical knowledge.
It just requires a grateful, thoughtful heart that is willing to take a moment to say thank you.
Are we guilty of the same behavior as the nine? Do we forget to say thank you, whether to God or to a person who helps us?
Let us be conscious of this and be sure to honor God by doing what is right, and expressing our gratitude, even for the smallest of things 🙏
