Ask God to Open the Eyes of Your Heart!
I have been sending out "Donnie Daily Gems" since January 1, 2006. My heart burns with a desire to share the gospel of Jesus Christ, the truth that God is good, life in Him is overflowing with His promises, and walking with Him is a life of miracles. Sometimes I wonder, though—do people truly grasp this? Do they see how exciting it is to live a life of faith, trusting God for every promise in His Word? Without this understanding, they might only catch a glimpse of all that God is doing and longs to do in their lives. Faith in God’s promises opens our spiritual eyes. When we lean into His Word with expectancy, it “floods the eyes of our understanding” and reveals His intimate, loving work in our lives. That expectancy helps us see Him in the smallest details, strengthening our faith and deepening our relationship with Him.
The Apostle Paul knew the importance of this and prayed fervently for believers to understand it. In Ephesians 1:18 (TLB), he wrote, “I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can see something of the future He has called you to share…”
Paul understood how vital it was for believers to see and believe in the promises of God. Even in the natural world, we see a profound truth: darkness cannot overpower light. John 1:4-5 (NKJV) declares, “In Him (Jesus) was life, and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood (or extinguished) it.”
Wherever Jesus is, His light is present. The world may not comprehend or understand it, but darkness can never extinguish it. God's light—His love and His promises—are always available to us.
So what does this mean for you and me? Do you ever face dark times? Feel lost, confused, or unsure of what to do? Even when you can’t yet see the answer, know that the light you need—the direction, clarity, and help—is available to you. It’s as close as your Bible. That’s what Paul meant when he prayed for believers to have their spiritual eyes enlightened. Light always triumphs over darkness.
If you love Jesus, light is available to you today. Think of how comforting a candle or flashlight feels in the dark—it changes everything. Draw near to Jesus and immerse yourself in His promises. Trusting in His Word refreshes your hope and ignites your faith. Believe that the Holy Spirit will illuminate the Scriptures, guiding you into God’s direction, goodness, miracles, and blessings. That is His will for you!
