Decisions
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
James 1:5-8
President Ronald Reagan liked to tell the story of when his aunt took him to a cobbler for a new pair of shoes. The cobbler asked if he wanted round toes or square toes, but Reagan couldn’t decide. When he returned still uncertain, the cobbler told him to come back soon to pick them up. To his surprise, Reagan found one shoe with round toes and one with square. The cobbler said, “This will teach you to never let people make decisions for you.” Reagan later reflected, “If you don’t make your own decisions, someone else will.”
We’ve all faced decisions where we didn’t know what to do. Sometimes we hesitate, not because we’re careless or rebellious, but because we truly want to do what’s right. The problem isn’t indecision alone—it’s uncertainty about which path is best. Thankfully, God has not left us to figure out life on our own. He invites us to ask Him for wisdom. And when we do, He gives it generously.
God’s wisdom is not reserved for the brilliant or experienced—it’s available to anyone who will humbly ask. When we face uncertain choices, we don’t have to rely on guesswork or gut feelings. We can open God’s Word, seek counsel from godly people, and pray with confidence that He will guide us. The promise of James 1 is that God gives wisdom generously and graciously. Our responsibility is to seek it sincerely and follow it obediently, trusting that His wisdom is always best.
When you need direction, don’t hesitate—ask God for wisdom, trust His guidance, and move forward in faith.
