The Bush Didn't Burn
Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb. And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.
Exodus 3:1-3
It is not uncommon for California to have a significant problem with wildfires, but 2024 was an exceptionally bad year. In all, there were more than 8,000 fires that burned more than one million acres of land. Things got even worse in January of 2025 when the Palisades Fire swept through the Los Angeles area. Firefighters battled tirelessly to contain the blaze, even as they faced the added challenge of working with limited water resources. In the end, thousands of homes and businesses were destroyed. A flame, dry conditions, and strong wind can quickly spread a fire with devastating results. If you visit an area burned by fire there will be destruction all around. That is the natural and normal course of a fire.
But when Moses saw a bush burning as he kept sheep in the wilderness, he quickly recognized that something unusual was happening. The fire was real, but it lacked the normal destructive nature fire normally displays. While the world does operate according to the natural laws that God put in place at creation, He is able to work in ways that cannot be explained apart from His power and intervention. God is able to overcome any obstacle or problem we face. Even when something seems to be impossible, when God is involved, it never truly is. “And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you” (Matthew 17:20).
We can trust God to keep all His promises no matter how impossible a situation might seem.
