DAILY DEVOTION
The Harvest
I love this time of year when you can go to the garden and see the reward for all your labor and sweat for the past few months. Last night for supper we had fresh green beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini and onions with a big ole pan of corn bread, it was delicious!
When I was growing up, around this time of year, I can remember the front porch lined with people and 5 gallon buckets of picked green beans to be strung, broken up and canned. The work was hard but oh the conversation and fellowship on that porch means so much to me now. A lot of work went into all the harvesting and putting away but oh the reward on a cold winter day when Mom would send me to the “warm house” to bring in potatoes, cans of green beans, tomatoes or kraut, etc.
There was nothing better than a home cooked meal from my Mom's table.
We can till up the ground, plant the seeds, hole the plants and chop the weeds but if the harvest is not gathered and preserved there will be no reward. The saddest scripture in the Bible is Jeremiah 8:20, “The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved”. John chapter 4 tells us to lift our eyes and look to the fields, for they are already white for harvest. Matthew chapter 9 tells us the harvest is plenty, but the laborers are few, also to pray for the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.
I sing a song titled “Days of Elijah”, in the 2nd verse it says “These are the days of the harvest. The fields are as white in your world. And we are the laborers in Your vineyard. Declaring the Word of the Lord”
It talks about the fields in our world. God bless each one of us as we labor in our own place that He has put us to labor in because the fields are surely white and plentiful all around us!
