Romans 10:3 (LSB) 3 For not knowing about the righteousness of God and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.
Reading through the apostle Paul’s epistles is truly beneficial to our walk with God.
We gain insights and understanding that are crucial to our growth and maturity as a believer.
But sometimes the wording may make these difficult to understand.
It can pay in large dividend for us to dig and research to find the truth in these writings.
In the verse above, Paul refers to people who did not know about the righteousness of God. He then states that they were “seeking to establish their own”.
Their own what? What was it that they were seeking to establish?
They tried to establish their own way of becoming righteous in God’s sight.
Doesn’t that sound just like us stubborn, fickle humans? We shun God’s way and try to do it our own way.
So, what did they do?
How did they attempt to make themselves righteous?
By ritualistic following of The Law.
They followed a set of laws and traditions.
But it was only empty mechanics that did nothing to change their hearts.
This is where most of us get it wrong: we ignore what God is trying to teach us and instead conjure up our own methods of becoming righteous in God’s sight.
And these methods land us in trouble every time!
Let us learn the importance of seeking God’s truth, not our own self-derived half-truths.
May we find satisfaction, fulfillment, and contentment in learning His ways and resting in them.
God’s ways are always better than ours. And He knows us better than we know ourselves.
