Out of the Pit
I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry. He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, and established my goings. And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
Psalm 40:1-3
Officials of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife responded to an emergency call in September of 2025 from the far northern part of the state. A family that owned a section of forested land called because they discovered a bull moose had fallen into an unused well on the property. Cole Brown heard noises that he first thought to be turkeys, but when he investigated, he saw antlers sticking up from the ground. Wildlife officials brought in a vet to sedate the moose, and they pulled him up from the nine foot deep well with straps attached to an excavator. In all, the rescue procedure took about five hours. The agency later reported, “Once the sedation wore off, the moose took off running, no worse for wear other than perhaps his bruised ego.”
Even as there was no way for that moose to escape his predicament on his own, there is no way for us to escape from the pit of sin on our own. No amount of effort, reformation, self-control, or turning over new leaves can deal with the problem of sin. We are utterly dependent on Someone else to rescue us, and because of His great grace and love for us, that is what He has provided. “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly” (Romans 5:6).
Because of the salvation those of us who have trusted Christ as our Savior have received, we should be faithful in proclaiming our gratitude and thanks to God. He alone is worthy of praise, and because of all He has done for us, we will never run out of reasons to honor and praise Him.
Do not let this day go by without expressing your appreciation to God for His gift of salvation.
