Made Like Us
Even so we, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world: But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
Galatians 4:3-5
Paul Harvey liked to tell the story of a farmer who stayed home when his wife and children went to church for a Christmas service on a cold winter evening. He had little use for religion and was happy to keep working. As the wind blew the man noticed that little birds were struggling, huddled against the cold. He opened a barn door for them and even put out some food, but they remained on the outside. Finally he realized they were afraid, not understanding he was trying to help. “ “If only I could be a bird,” he thought to himself, “and mingle with them and speak their language. Then I could tell them not to be afraid. Then I could show them the way to the safe, warm barn. But I would have to be one of them so they could see and hear and understand.”
That perfectly sums up the Christmas story. The gulf between God and man created by sin cannot be crossed from our side. It had to be God coming to us. Jesus came to show God's love, demonstrating both through His life and death what God offered those who would come to Him. He was God on earth, but able to be seen and understood because He was also human. “Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?” (John 14:9). Jesus voluntarily subjected Himself to all of the restrictions of the law given by Moses. He invites us to come to Him, finding salvation so that we can become part of God's family.
Jesus clearly shows the love of God the Father to all those who come to Him in faith.
