An Example of Faith
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. For with God nothing shall be impossible. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.
Luke 1:35-38
When Gabriel came to Mary with life-changing, earth-shattering news—a message that would upend her entire life—she could have responded in a number of ways. She could have refused to listen and accept the message she received, just as Pharaoh did with the message from God that Moses delivered to let the Israelites go. She could have refused to believe that God could use her, just as Gideon even after two nights with the fleece still wanted additional confirmation before believing what God said. She could have doubted and questioned the messenger, just as Zacharias did when the angel told him that he and his elderly wife would have a baby boy, demanding evidence before believing.
Mary did none of those things. Although she did question how what she was told would be possible, she did not doubt that it would happen. Once she found out that the power of God was behind the promise of the angel, her response was submission to God's plan. When we have something placed before us that is difficult or may even seem impossible, we must not waver in our faith. Whether it is a lost friend or family member who keeps rejecting the gospel, or a financial hardship from the loss of a job, or a devastatingly negative medical diagnosis, we should believe God. While God does not promise to do what we think is best, He always does what is best. That is what Mary believed.
We demonstrate our faith not through our words, but through our acts of obedience to what God has said.
