Big decisions
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. – Galatians 1:10
Want to know the hardest thing about breaking off an engagement two weeks before the wedding? Yeah, I’ll tell you.
I remember it like it was yesterday. I needed to end my engagement, but the wedding was two weeks away. The hardest obstacle to overcome? “What would people say?” “What will everyone in my life think?”
Around that time I came across Galatians 1:10 that says: “For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
That verse struck my heart with an undeniable clarity. It reminded me that living for the approval of others is a trap. The secret to freedom in the Christian life is to learn to live for the audience of One.
Here’s the hard truth: You and I will never please everyone. It’s impossible. We will never make decisions that are unanimously accepted by the people in our lives. And yet, so often, we give others’ opinions far more weight than they deserve. We let their approval, or the fear of losing it, control our lives. But what matters most isn’t what they think. It’s what God thinks.
As you step into the new year and face important decisions, pause and ask yourself: “Who am I trying to please the most?”
