Spiritual housecleaning
And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins. – Mark 2:22
I am a neat freak, a total minimalist. I like to keep things simple and clean.
But whether you’re a minimalist or not, most people understand that the only way to fill our closets with new stuff is to get rid of the old. So, before we bring new things into our homes, we usually have to do a little housecleaning.
The same principle applies to our minds and hearts.
Jesus once said, “No one puts new wine into old wineskins… new wine is for fresh wineskins” (Mark 2:22). In other words, the new work God wants to do in us often requires letting go of what no longer belongs there. If we want our minds to be filled with truth, peace, and hope, we can’t keep holding on to thoughts, habits, or patterns that are rotten.
Renewing our minds isn’t just about adding good things, it’s also about removing what doesn’t belong. Sometimes that means confronting unhealthy thought patterns. Other times it means letting go of habits, influences, or distractions that crowd out God’s voice.
It’s a kind of spiritual housecleaning. When we clear out what is stale and unhealthy, we make room for God to fill us with what is new, life-giving, and pleasing to Him.
Prayer: Lord, help me let go of the habits and thoughts that don’t honor you.
Reflect: What occupies your thought life? Are there some things you need to clean up and replace with what’s pleasing to God?
