When you don’t feel brave
Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go. – Joshua 1:9
What would you do today if you weren’t afraid?
Joshua had every reason to feel intimidated. Moses, the leader he had followed for years, was gone and now, Joshua was responsible for leading an entire nation into the Promised Land.
Those were some pretty big shoes to fill.
God knew exactly what Joshua was facing. Yet He didn't tell Joshua to wait until he felt more confident. He didn't give him a five-step plan for overcoming fear. He simply said, “Be strong and courageous.”
And then He told Joshua why: “For the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua's courage wasn't supposed to come from believing more in himself. It came from believing more in God.
That's an important distinction.
We often think courage means feeling confident, fearless, and ready for whatever comes next. But biblical courage isn't the absence of fear. It's choosing obedience because we know who goes with us.
Maybe God is asking you to do something that feels bigger than you. You don't have to wait until you feel brave.
Following Jesus with your whole life means that when He says go, we go—not because we're certain of ourselves, but because we're certain of Him.
Your confidence isn't that you've got this.
It's that God has you.
Prayer: Father, when fear makes me hesitate, remind me that courage doesn't come from confidence in myself but confidence in you. Amen.
Reflect: What have you been afraid to do because you don't feel ready or courageous enough? What step of obedience could you take today because you know God is with you?
