This section explains how to solve some problems that you may encounter when using various scanners with DocuScan Plus.
On some Windows PCs, the CanoScan LiDE 220 is known to stop working from time to time if certain USB power management features are enabled. Note that this can be an issue even on desktop computers, where you might not expect power management to be applicable. To work around this problem, you can disable USB power management. There are two stages to this process. First, you need to adjust the behavior system-wide in the Power Options control panel. Then, you need to adjust the behavior for each USB hub in Device Manager. These instructions are for Windows 8 and later.
Press WINDOWS-KEY+X to open the global context menu.
Press "O" to open the Power Options control panel.
TAB until "Change plan settings for the [plan name] plan" is in focus, where "[plan name]" is usually either "Balanced" or "Performance".
Press ENTER to open the edit plan settings link.
Focus is on change advanced settings. Press ENTER to open this option.
Press SHIFT+TAB to focus the change settings that are currently unavailable link and press ENTER.
Press TAB to focus the tree-view of the currently active plan.
DOWN-ARROW until USB settings is in focus and press RIGHT-ARROW to expand the view.
DOWN-ARROW to focus USB selective suspend setting and RIGHT-ARROW to expand this item.
Press DOWN-ARROW to select the setting.
Press RIGHT-ARROW to focus the combo box.
Press UP-ARROW to change the selection to disabled.
Press TAB twice to focus the OK button and ENTER to activate it.
Press ALT+F4 to close the Power Options window.
Press WINDOWS-KEY+PAUSE/BREAK to open the System dialog.
TAB until Device Manager is in focus and press ENTER.
Press TAB to focus the tree-view.
Press "U" to focus Universal Bus Controllers.
Press RIGHT-ARROW to expand it.
Press DOWN-ARROW until generic USB Hub is in focus and ENTER to open its properties.
Press CONTROL+SHIFT+TAB to focus the power management page.
If the "allow the computer to turn off this device" check box is checked, press SPACE-BAR to uncheck it.
Press TAB to focus the OK button and ENTER to activate it.
Repeat steps 6 through 9 until the "allow the computer to turn off this device" check box is unchecked for all generic USB Hubs. (IMPORTANT! Generic USB Hub items are rarely in order all together, so be very careful to explore the entire USB tree to make sure you have executed this process on all of them.)
Once all of this is done, press ALT+F4 twice to close the Device Manager and the System Dialog respectively.
