Scanning a printed document

To begin scanning a new printed document, press the "Scan a Document" button in the main DocuScan Plus window. You will then be asked to choose which device you want to use and which type of scanning you want to do. DocuScan Plus supports two types of scanning. Simple Scan is for scanning, reading, and optionally editing one page at a time. Batch Scan is for efficiently scanning a multi-page document and optionally reading as you scan.

Note that on Windows, once you have successfully scanned a page the first time, DocuScan Plus will automatically focus the "Simple Scan" button rather than the device drop-down list, for your convenience. You can always change the default scanning device in Preferences.

Simple Scan

After you choose Simple Scan, place the first page on the scanner face-down, or if you're using a camera, place the page under the camera face-up, then press the "Scan First Page" button. After the page has been scanned and processed, a tone will play and the page content will be displayed. On Windows, if you use System Access or are running DocuScan Plus in self-voicing mode, the page will be read automatically; if you use another screen reader, the page will receive focus, but whether it is read automatically will depend on how your screen reader is configured. Regardless of your screen reader, on Windows, you can press F6 to move between the document content and the buttons in this window. On the Mac, after you hear the tone, move the VoiceOver cursor to the HTML content, then interact with it to read the page. Above the page content, DocuScan Plus will indicate whether the page is right-side-up, sideways, or upside-down.

If DocuScan Plus fails to scan the page, if it fails to run optical character recognition, or if it detects that the page is blank, it will display an error message, and you'll need to use the "Re-scan" button to try that page again. You can also press the "Re-scan" button to try again if you're not satisfied with the scanning and recognition results for a given page. If you find that a page has errors that you want to manually correct, press the "Edit" button, and you'll be able to edit the page as you see fit.

Once you're done with a page, if you want to keep it, you can press the "Save" button to save your document. Or if you have another page to scan, put that page on the scanner or under the camera as you did with the previous page, then press the "Scan Next Page" button. When you're done with your document, you can also use any of the document conversion buttons described in the section below called "Working with a document".

If you want to throw out the page or pages that you've scanned and start scanning again, press the "Start Over" button. DocuScan Plus will ask you if you're sure, and if you answer yes, the Simple Scan process will begin again. Alternatively, you can simply close the window, and after asking you if you're sure, DocuScan Plus will discard the document.

Batch Scan

When you choose Batch Scan, DocuScan Plus will check whether your scanner has an automatic document feeder. If it does, DocuScan Plus will ask you if you want to use the feeder for this session. If you answer yes, you will need to load the pages you want to scan into the feeder, then press the "Scan Pages" button to start scanning. Otherwise, place the first page face-down on the scanner, or face-up under the camera, and press the "Scan First Page" button to start scanning.

Once DocuScan Plus has finished scanning and processing a page or pages, it will play a sound and display the text. As with Simple Scan, how you start reading the content depends on your operating system and screen reader. On Windows, if you use System Access or are running DocuScan Plus in self-voicing mode, the new content will be read automatically; if you use another screen reader, the content will receive focus, but whether it is read automatically will depend on how your screen reader is configured. Regardless of your screen reader, on Windows, you can press F6 to move between the document content and the buttons in this window. On the Mac, after you hear the sound, move the VoiceOver cursor to the HTML content, then interact with it to read the content.

If you are not using an automatic document feeder, then for each page after the first one, you'll need to place the page on the scanner or under the camera as you did with the first one, then start the scanning process again. There are a few ways to do this. If you're currently reading the content you've already scanned, you can start scanning another page without disrupting your reading by pressing Space Bar. Alternatively, you can press the "Scan Next Page" button to scan another page. In that case, on Windows, focus will return to the recognized text after scanning and processing are finished.

Once you're done scanning your document, press the "Save" button to save it. You can also use any of the document conversion buttons described in the section below called "Working with a document".

As with Simple Scan, if you want to throw out the page or pages that you've scanned and start scanning again, press the "Start Over" button. DocuScan Plus will ask you if you're sure, and if you answer yes, the Batch Scan process will begin again. Alternatively, you can simply close the window, and after asking you if you're sure, DocuScan Plus will discard the document.
