Using Sero on secondary or public Windows PCs

Throughout this online help, we have explained how to use Sero on all of your computers and devices, including a Windows PC, a Mac, an iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, ANdroid device, Amazon Fire tablet, or Apple TV. However, there are some features of Sero that are specifically designed to be used from Windows PCs other than your primary computer, including public computers that you may find while you're out and about. This section describes these features.

If you have a license to use System Access and Sero on a USB flash drive, you can plug your drive into any Windows computer and use Sero just as if you were at your home computer.

If you have questions about how to obtain a license to use Serotek products on a USB flash drive, please contact sales toll-free at +1 866-202-0520, or send email to info@serotek.com.

If you don't have access to a USB flash drive, you can still use your Sero subscription from a Windows PC on the road by visiting www.satogo.com and logging in with your credentials.

Once you've gained access to Sero from a computer away from home, you can check your email, look at the weather, browse your newspaper, and everything else you're accustomed to doing when using Sero at home.

In addition to accessing content on Sero itself, sometimes you need access to documents or other information that resides on your home computer. Sero makes it possible for you to access, edit, move, and copy materials on your home computer, even when you're working remotely.

Accessing documents on your home computer remotely

  1. To do this, you must first make sure that your HomeServer is enabled on your primary computer.

  2. When logged in to Sero at home, access Preferences by pressing Alt+P, and then choose the Manage My HomeServer option.

  3. If the HomeServer is not currently running, you'll see an option labeled Start HomeServer. Press Enter on this option to run the HomeServer.

  4. If the HomeServer is already running, you'll see an option to stop it. Do not choose this option if you want to be able to access the contents of your home computer from elsewhere.

Note that within this dialogue, you will also see an option to edit your remote control preferences. If you wish to establish a full remote connection to your home PC, described in the section labeled "Remote Access Options for System Access,” you will want to edit these preferences to allow remote access.

My Files... at home, and away from home

The My Files option located in Sero Home allows you to access the files on the PC you're currently using, as well as files located on your home computer.

Opening a file

When you choose the My Files option from Sero Home, you will be presented with a list of folders on your local computer. These may include your media library folder, files you've downloaded while using Sero, your Sero documents, your Windows Desktop, and more.

To select the file you'd like to open on your local computer:

  1. Choose the folder you'd like to browse from within the folders list. You may navigate the folders list with your Up or Down Arrow keys.

  2. Once your focus is on the correct folder, just press Enter or tab to the Open Folder button.

  3. Next you will see a list of files inside the folder you've chosen. Note that if the folder you've opened has subfolders, you'll land in the subfolders list and will need to tab to the files list to see them.

  4. Once you find the file you want, press Enter to open it. Note that files such as .zip files and .exe files cannot be opened for security reasons, but you can open documents, mp3 files and the like.

Downloading files from your home computer

If the file you need to access is on your home computer, you'll first need to tell Sero that you want to browse your home machine, not the machine from which you're currently working.

To do this:

  1. Tab to the My Files at Home option once you've opened My files from Sero Home.

  2. When you do this, you'll be presented with the same folder and file lists you see on the local computer, only these files are located on your home machine.

  3. When you want to work with one of these files, you'll need to choose the Download button, in order to retrieve the file you'd like to work on from your home machine.

  4. At this point, the standard Sero dialogue will appear, asking if you'd like to open or save the file. Choose the desired option and the action will be completed.

  5. When you are done making changes to the file you've opened, simply choose the Save option in the application you are working from, and the file will be uploaded, complete with the changes you have made, to your home computer.

Manipulating files and folders

You can rename, move, copy, and delete folders or files by first selecting the file or folder that you wish to change, then activating one of the buttons, (such as Delete, Move, or Copy).

You can also create a folder by choosing the Create Folder button with the spacebar. Note that each of these options is available both on the computer you're currently working from, and from the My Files at Home dialogue.
