As a Sero subscriber, you can check your Sero email account from outside of the Sero software itself. While the Sero email program is very easy to use, there may be times when you will want to use another program, such as Outlook, Windows Live Mail, Apple Mail, or the email program on your mobile device. Now you can.
Also, Sero's built-in email program is only available on Windows; it is not available in the Sero app on Mac, iOS, Android, or Amazon Fire OS. That's because on these devices, the device's native email program is designed to handle email with wonderful accessibility and efficiency. We at Serotek support mainstreaming accessibility, so we have not felt the need to re-invent the email wheel on these devices. So on these devices, you will need to use the information in this section to use the device's built-in email program to access your Sero email.
Please note that this feature may be difficult for novice users to set up, as the location of mail account settings will vary. Serotek technical support may be unable to give in-depth assistance with setting up your particular email program or mobile device.
We will, however, provide the settings you’ll need to enter in your phone's email program in order to send and receive email from your sero.email or samobile.net address.
To enable a third-party email program to access your Sero email:
Open Sero on your Windows PC by pressing Control+Alt+N.
Select Email from the Sero home screen and press Enter.
Select the Set POP3/IMAP Password (advanced) link and press Enter.
Fill in a password. This password will only be used to retrieve your email using POP3 or IMAP. It has no bearing on your password or PIN to access other Sero services, System Access, or DocuScan Plus. Type this password in both the Password and the Confirm Password edit fields. Note that you will not hear the password as you type it, so type carefully.
Press the OK button.
For your security, and the security of the Sero community as a whole, it is important that you choose a password that is not easily breakable by password-cracking tools employed by spammers who wish to use your account to send unsolicited email.
Sero has a tool that will verify the strength of your password, and will not let you proceed if the password is deemed too weak. However, it can be difficult to choose a secure password that is both easy to remember by you, and is not easily crackable.
Here are some tips to help you.
A password must be at least 8 characters in length, and should contain upper and lower case letters, numbers, and even a symbol such as an exclamation mark or slash.
Password cracking tools often employ the method of analyzing a string of characters and looking for words that are found in the dictionary. Not only can these tools detect a word like "book", which would be found in the dictionary, but can also detect words where letters have been replaced with similar-looking symbols. In the "book" example, b00k would still be detected as a dictionary word, assisting the password cracker in getting close to cracking the entire password.
Spaces are permitted in a password, and can increase the security of the password.
You want to choose a password that you'll remember, so one strategy could be to choose a phrase and use the first letters in the words of that phrase as part of your password.
For example, let's consider the phrase: "Sero is great, and only costs \$149 per year!”
A phrase this long is impractical to type as a password, especially on a mobile device. However, let's take the first letters in this sentence, employ the dollar sign, comma and exclamation point, and you get this:
Sig,aoc\$149py!
Now you've created a password you can remember, and is not easily crackable.
Once you've created your secure password, you can set up your email program.
Here are the settings you will need. Please note that the location of these settings will vary by email program, and Serotek technical support may not be able to help you find them.
This is the name you want people to see when they get email from you.
Choose from POP3 or IMAP. You can use either one, but IMAP is recommended if you plan to check your email from multiple places, such as the Sero built-in email program, Windows Live Mail, and your mobile device. IMAP does a better job of keeping mail straight when it is checked from multiple computers and devices.
Whether you have a sero.email address or are still using an older samobile.net address, your server host name is: mail.sero.email
This will depend on whether you have chosen POP3 or IMAP.
For POP3, use port 995.
For IMAP, use port 993.
Please note that in many third-party email programs, the options for setting incoming and outgoing mail ports are not found on the main configuration screen, but rather may be under a section titled "advanced" or something similar.
If you are unsure where to find mail port settings for your email program, please consult the documentation for that program.
Whether you have a sero.email address or are still using an older samobile.net address, your server host name is: mail.sero.email
Note: both the incoming and outgoing servers use SSL encryption to ensure that your data is sent securely.
Your username is your complete Sero email address, such as fred@sero.email or fred@samobile.net
This is the password you set earlier. If using Outlook, do not check the box for Secure Password Authentication.
The SMTP server does require authentication to be used. You will use the same username and password for the SMTP server as you used for the incoming IMAP or POP3 servers above.
Many Internet service providers block the default SMTP port; port 25, from being used. This is a defense against abuse by spammers. So we don't allow the use of port 25 to send email from your Sero account.
Instead, to send email through Sero's SMTP server, you will need to use port 465 for SSL-encrypted SMTP.
This is the case for most devices, but in the case of iOS devices such as the iPhone or iPad we recommend using port 587 instead. Port 465 will work on these devices, but the connection may take a bit longer to be established.
Some email programs, such as Outlook, offer the ability to enter your email address, and using this information the program attempts to find the appropriate information to configure your settings for you.
In almost all cases, the program is unable to detect the correct settings. Don't be alarmed when this happens. It simply means that you need to manually configure the settings for your account using the information above.
