Downloading from Bookshare

If you have an account with Bookshare.org, you can download books and periodicals from Bookshare directly into DocuScan Plus, then read them or convert them to any of the output formats that DocuScan Plus supports. If you don't have a Bookshare account, you can also download a small number of freely available books from Bookshare.

To start using Bookshare in DocuScan Plus, press the "Download from Bookshare" button in the main window. The first time you do this, DocuScan Plus will ask you if you have a Bookshare account. If you answer yes, you will need to log in with your Bookshare username and password. If you answer no, you can always log into Bookshare later.

Browsing books

The main Bookshare window has two buttons that you can use to browse through books on Bookshare: "Browse Popular Books" and "Browse New Books". When you press one of these buttons, DocuScan Plus will open the appropriate list of books. Once you've selected a book, you can press Enter or Return to download it, or press the "More Info" button to find out more about the book before you download it.

Searching for books

If you press the "Search" button in the main Bookshare window, you can search for books by title, author, or full text. First enter the text you want to search for. Then you can choose the type of search from the "Search type" drop-down list; the default is title and author. Once you press Enter or Return, DocuScan Plus will send your search query to Bookshare, and the results will be shown in a list, just as when you browse popular books or new books. Once you select a book, you can press Enter or Return to download it, or press the "More Info" button to find out more about the book first.

Downloading books

After browsing or searching, when you download a book, DocuScan Plus will immediately save it to the cloud, unless you have disabled cloud storage and processing in Preferences (only available on Windows). You will then be able to perform any of the actions described in the section above called "Working with a document". You don't have to be concerned about what format is used when downloading; DocuScan Plus will take care of this for you.

Browsing periodicals

To browse the newspapers and magazines offered by Bookshare, press the "Browse Periodicals" button in the main Bookshare window. After selecting a periodical, press Enter or Return to download the latest edition. As with books, when you download a periodical edition, DocuScan Plus will immediately save it to the cloud, unless you have disabled cloud storage and processing in Preferences (only available on Windows). You will then be able to perform any of the actions described in the section above called "Working with a document". You don't have to be concerned about what format is used when downloading; DocuScan Plus will take care of this for you.

Converting a previously downloaded Bookshare book

If you've already downloaded a book from the Bookshare website, rather than using DocuScan Plus, you can still bring the book into DocuScan Plus to take advantage of all of the reading and conversion options that DocuScan Plus provides. For this to work, the book needs to be a DAISY book in a Zip file, or an ePub file. To bring a previously downloaded Bookshare book into DocuScan Plus, from the main Bookshare window, press the button called "Convert Previously Downloaded Bookshare Book". DocuScan Plus will then present a standard file selection dialog so you can locate the Zip or ePub file. The book will be immediately saved to the cloud, unless you've disabled Serotek cloud storage and processing in Preferences (only available on Windows). You can then perform any of the actions described in the section above called "Working with a document".
