DocuScan Plus offers a variety of preferences you can adjust. To do this, press the "Preferences" button in the main DocuScan Plus window. DocuScan Plus will then show a window with a button for each category of preferences you can set.
On Windows, each Preferences sub-section has an OK button, a Cancel button, and a Reset button, and preferences aren't saved until you press the OK button. On the Mac, as is typical for Mac applications, all changes to preferences take effect immediately. However, there is still a Reset button that you can use to reset each subsection of preferences back to its defaults.
Note that this section is not available when using NVDA.
The rest of the preferences in this section are only available when using DocuScan Plus in conjunction with System Access or in self-voicing mode.
Key echo: Check this if you want to have every character spoken as you type it.
Word echo: Check this if you want every word you type to be spoken when you press Space Bar, a punctuation mark, or Enter.
Link alert type: This drop-down list lets you set how links within a document are spoken when they are encountered. The choices are "tone", which lets you hear an audible tone as each link is spoken; "word", which will speak the word "link" before each link is spoken; and "none", which will disable this feature.
Optional messages: Some messages, such as your position in a list view, are useful but not essential. With this drop-down list, you can choose to read the messages in an alternate voice (the default), the same voice as normal speech, or not at all.
Default device: This drop-down list will let you choose the scanner or camera you want to use by default when scanning a printed document.
Document language: If you want to scan printed documents in a language other than English, you'll need to choose the language from this drop-down list. Note that this option is only available if you have purchased DocuScan Plus version 3 or later, or you have a subscription to the Accessibility Anywhere package.
Disable Serotek cloud storage and processing for documents (Windows only): If you are particularly concerned about security or bandwidth usage, check this check box, and your documents will never be sent to Serotek's cloud storage and processing services. This option comes with a few limitations. When this option is active, you cannot send documents to an Amazon Kindle account, you cannot convert documents to Braille (BRF), and you cannot open documents in Microsoft Word, RTF, HTML, or ePub format.
On Windows, if you're running DocuScan Plus in conjunction with System Access or in self-voicing mode, these preferences will affect the speech you hear throughout the program. If you're using DocuScan Plus via another Windows screen reader or on the Mac, these preferences will only affect conversion of documents to DAISY or MP3.
Language (Windows only): This list lets you select the language to use if your text-to-speech engine is multilingual, or "automatic" to automatically select the language based on what you're reading. Note that for your convenience, since this preference is infrequently used, it doesn't automatically get focus when you open the window; you'll need to Shift+Tab to it from the "Engine" drop-down list.
Engine (Windows only): This drop-down list lets you select which text-to-speech engine to use. After you select an engine, you will hear the sentence, "This is a test of your text-to-speech settings."
Voice: This list lets you select which voice to use. On Windows, its contents will depend on which text-to-speech engine you've chosen. On the Mac, you can choose any of the voices that are available in VoiceOver, or in any other Mac application that supports text-to-speech. If you're using DocuScan plus via a Windows screen reader other than System Access, or on the Mac, once you select a voice, you'll hear the sentence, "This is a test of your text-to-speech settings."
Faster and slower buttons: These buttons let you adjust the speaking rate. After you press one of these buttons, you'll hear the sentence, "This is a test of your text-to-speech settings." Note that on the Mac, you should tab to one of these buttons and press it with the Space Bar, rather than VO+Space Bar, so VoiceOver doesn't interfere with the test of the new setting.
Higher and lower buttons (Windows only): These buttons let you adjust the pitch of the voice. After you press one of these buttons, you'll hear the sentence, "This is a test of your text-to-speech settings." Note that some text-to-speech engines don't let you change the pitch.
Punctuation: This list lets you determine which punctuation marks are included in the speech output.
Raise the pitch, say the word "cap", and beep on capital letters (Windows only): If you're running DocuScan Plus in conjunction with System Access or in self-voicing mode, these check boxes control how capital letters are handled when reading character by character.
This section is only available if you're using DocuScan Plus in conjunction with System Access or in self-voicing mode. Note that if you're using a third-party screen magnifier like ZoomText or MAGic, you should not enable magnification in this section, even if you're using DocuScan Plus's text-to-speech output. If you just want larger print within documents themselves, refer to "Font and Color Preferences" below.
Magnify the screen: Check this box to enable full-screen magnification within DocuScan Plus.
Larger and smaller buttons: Use these buttons to adjust the magnification factor.
Invert colors in the magnified image: Use this check box if you want to reverse all colors, so for example, black-on-white becomes white-on-black.
On Windows, if you're running DocuScan Plus in conjunction with System Access or in self-voicing mode, these preferences will affect the behavior when a supported braille display is connected to your computer. If you're using DocuScan Plus via another Windows screen reader or on the Mac, these preferences will only affect conversion of documents to braille (BRF).
Braille translation table: This drop-down list lets you select the braille translation table you want to use. This defaults to US English 8-dot computer braille.
Keep text-to-speech enabled while a braille display is connected (Windows only): If you're using DocuScan Plus in conjunction with System Access or in self-voicing mode, you can uncheck this check box to disable text-to-speech while a supported braille display is connected.
These preferences control the font and colors to use when displaying a document on screen and when saving it as an RTF file.
Font size: This drop-down list lets you select the size of the text in points. A larger number means larger text.
Font: This drop-down list lets you choose the kind of font you want to use.
Foreground, background, unvisited link, and visited link colors: These drop-down lists let you select the colors to use. If the background color is the same as any of the other colors, then text or links will be invisible. However, you can use the same color for the foreground, unvisited links, and visited links if you prefer.
Always use my preferred colors, font, and font size: These check boxes let you override any colors, font, and font sizes specified in the documents themselves.
